How to make Tissue Paper Pompoms

We have had several customers ask us how we made the tissue paper pompoms for our Valentine’s Day window display.   They are very easy and a great craft to do on a lazy Sunday with the kids, over a glass of wine with friends.

These easy-to-make Tissue Paper Pom Poms adds a splash of colour to any wedding, bedroom, or event for just pennies a piece.

MATERIALS & SUPPLIES ::
  • We used 8 sheets of 18 x 26 inch tissue paper.  Any tissue paper will do.   We have lots on hand for wrapping floral bouquets, but you can pick it up at any dollar store of craft centre.
  • 24 gauge floral wire
  • Sissors

STEP 1::

Fold accordion style, with about 1 1/2 inch folds. Crease with each fold.

STEP 2::
Fold a piece of floral wire in half and slip over center...twist.   We used longer pieces with a loop on the end so we had something we could easily grab to hang them.

Trim the ends of the tissue into rounded or pointy shapes.  We found that we made these round edges much more dramatic (ie. bigger), otherwise they didn't look very puffy.

STEP 3::
Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time. This part was somewhat difficult, and required a gentle hand...tissue paper is very delicate and tears easily!

I had little patience as we were in a hurry, so my mum and sister did this part while I made more accordian pieces.   We had quite the assembly line going!

 Then, just fluff and puff until you get the look you're going for.

You can hang the tissue paper pom poms by tying a length of clear thread or ribbon to the floral wire.  Molly, our floral designer, strung them using fishing line at different heights and depths  to create a beautiful sense of drama and dimension to the window.
